On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, our position is blunt: for structural welds, we use American-made steel matching the original thickness, because Texas sun and Humble humidity don’t forgive thin metal. • The gate sags at the hinge side and drags on the driveway. The weld at the hinge-to-post connection has begun to crack or stretch. Once a gate sags more than about half an inch at the latch end, the operator has to work harder on every cycle, which shortens motor life.
• You see a fresh rust line radiating from a weld joint. A crack lets moisture into the joint. Houston-area humidity accelerates this, and what looks like surface rust in July is often a fatigued weld by January.
• The gate shudders or hops when the operator starts or stops. A broken weld on a bracket plate lets slop into the system. The operator’s limit switches still think the gate is where it should be, but the physical gate has moved.

You can check a few things safely before calling. Look for visible cracks at weld joints with a flashlight. Lift the gate gently at the latch end and watch for play at the hinge.
