Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Humble Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Elite-compatible keypads and intercom modules across Humble, TX, with most repairs running between $180 and $420 installed depending on the model and whether the wiring is intact. We carry replacement parts on the truck for most Elite SL-3000 and EL-25 series systems, and we can typically complete a keypad or intercom swap the same day we diagnose it. The usual story we hear: the keypad beeps but the gate won’t move, or the intercom rings inside but no voice comes through, or the keypad went dark after a storm off Lake Houston.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite gate systems split into two main camps: the slide-gate operators (SL series, like the SL-3000 and SL-1000) and the swing-gate operators (CSW and MSW lines). The keypads and intercoms on these are not interchangeable between series, which catches a lot of Humble homeowners off guard. The SL-3000 uses a different mounting pattern and wiring harness than the CSW200UL, and we’ve seen people buy the wrong part online only to find the connector won’t seat.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Elite keypads made before 2012 used a four-wire connection. After 2012, most moved to a five-wire setup with a separate ground for the backlight. If your keypad has four wires and you order a new five-wire pad, you’ll need a small adapter pigtail, which we stock. The model number is usually printed on a label inside the keypad housing, behind the faceplate. Two screws, tilt it forward, and the sticker tells you what you have. We can identify it from a photo if you text us before we head out.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Elite keypads, we lean OEM. The aftermarket units we’ve tested don’t always hold up to Texas sun on a west-facing column in Humble, and the keypad membranes crack within about 18 months. OEM Elite keypads use a UV-stabilized faceplate. The intercom modules are a little more forgiving – we’ve had good results with aftermarket speaker-microphone replacements that save you roughly $60 over the OEM part, and we’ll tell you up front which one we’re installing and why. We’re an independent service provider, not an Elite dealer, so we’re not married to one parts source.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keypad beeps but gate doesn’t move. The keypad is sending a signal, but the relay in the control board isn’t closing. It’s usually the board or a broken wire between the keypad and the operator, not the keypad itself. We test with a meter before selling you anything.
  • Keys feel spongy or need hard presses. The membrane under the keypad face has worn out. Humble heat accelerates this; a keypad that faces afternoon sun off FM 1960 will typically lose tactile response in two to three years. Replacement is a 40-minute job.
  • Intercom rings but no audio from the house unit. Often a corroded wire at the outdoor station or a failed speaker coil. We’ve seen spiders nest inside the intercom housing and short the microphone leads, especially on properties near Lake Houston.
  • Water inside the keypad housing. The gasket behind the faceplate has dried out. This is the single most common failure we see on older Elite keypads in Humble. Once water gets in, the circuit board corrodes fast.
  • Gate opens randomly or at odd hours. A failing keypad can send phantom signals when temperature shifts cause the membrane to contract. We’ve had customers near Balmoral report gates opening at 3 a.m. The fix is a new keypad and a fresh gasket.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed replacement for an Elite keypad in Humble runs $180 to $290. The intercom station runs $250 to $420, depending on whether we’re replacing just the speaker-microphone module or the whole housing unit. If both keypad and intercom need replacing, you’re looking at roughly $380 to $560 installed.

What drives the range: which Elite series you have, whether the existing wiring tests good or needs a fresh pull, and whether we’re replacing just the faceplate assembly or the entire backplate and board. Worn gaskets get replaced at no additional charge when we install a new keypad; leaving an old gasket behind is how you end up back in the same spot next monsoon season.

Every quote is written before we start. You’ll see the part number, the labor, and the total at the bottom. No surprise invoice at the end. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1. The replacement part and our work are covered under the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something’s not right within a year, we come back and make it right, no argument, no fee.

You can safely check three things without opening anything dangerous: look for water inside the keypad lens, check the fuses in the operator box, and confirm the intercom’s indoor unit is plugged in and the volume knob isn’t zeroed out. Those checks cost you nothing and sometimes solve the problem in five minutes.

Beyond that, we’d be careful. These are low-voltage DC systems, so it’s not a shock hazard like a garage door spring or a 240V panel. But the real risk is misdiagnosis: you buy a $90 keypad, wire it wrong, and now the board won’t respond. Then you’re paying for a keypad plus a new board. If you’ve already started poking around and things aren’t cooperating, stop there and call us at (346) 423-6136. Adrian Vance can talk you through what you’re seeing and tell you straight whether it’s worth a service call.
