Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear gate operators are common across Humble subdivisions, and the welded components that fail tend to be the same across model lines: the ACT-31B, ACT-34B, LRA and LRB series swing operators, the SL and SLD slide operators, and the older AE series. The welded parts we’re usually matching are the gate hinge brackets, the operator mounting plate, the rack-mount tabs on slide gates, and the arm attachment brackets that bolt to the gate leaf. On Linear swing arms specifically, the bracket that connects the operator arm to the gate takes repeated stress every cycle, and when it fatigues, the weld cracks before the bracket itself bends.

Identifying the right part comes down to measurements, not just the model number stamped on the motor. We measure the gate leaf thickness, the hinge-to-edge offset, and the post diameter before we cut or weld anything. Linear’s arm brackets span roughly 1.5 to 2.5 inches in the clamping channel, and if you’ve got an older Linear actuator with a one-inch clevis pin versus the newer 3/4-inch pin, that alone changes the bracket spec. Generic aftermarket brackets often ship with slotted holes for “universal” fit. Those slots wallow out under torque. We cut and weld brackets to the actual measurement, not to the range.

When an OEM Linear bracket is available and the gate geometry hasn’t changed, we use it. When the original part is discontinued or the post has shifted out of true, we fabricate from square stock so the repair matches the gate as it sits today, not as it left the factory.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate scrapes or drags at the latch end. A hinge weld has stretched or cracked, dropping the leaf a quarter inch or more. In Humble’s clay soil, posts shift seasonally, and a weld that was square in January can be carrying load in June.
• The operator arm clunks at the start of each cycle. The bracket bolt has ovaled its hole, or the weld at the bracket-to-gate connection has cracked and the arm takes up slack before it moves the gate. That clunk is the sound of metal hammering metal.
• You can see daylight through a weld joint that used to be solid. A cracked weld on a Linear arm bracket is usually a hairline first, then a visible gap. We photograph it, measure it, and tell you whether it’s grind-and-reweld or full replacement.
• The gate stops mid-cycle and reverses. The motor senses increased current draw because a binding hinge or a cracked mount is loading the operator. Linear boards flag this as an obstruction, but the obstruction is often the gate’s own weight on a failed weld.
• You hear a metal-on-metal groan near the post when the gate moves. That’s a hinge pin galling inside a welded barrel because the weld has shifted the alignment. Silicone spray buys a week. The fix is re-welding the hinge in true alignment.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely do a visual inspection: look for cracked paint at weld joints, grab the gate mid-leaf and try to lift it to check for hinge slop, and watch the operator arm bracket during a full cycle to see if it flexes. That tells you where the problem is. It doesn’t tell you the fix, and for welding it shouldn’t.

Gate welding is not a weekend project. The gate leaf is under tension and its own weight, the hinges are load-bearing, and a poor weld on a 400-pound gate is a liability the first time the wind catches it.
