Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Humble Owner’s Guide

Mighty Mule keypad and intercom repair in Humble typically runs $145 to $320 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad itself, the intercom board, or both. We stock Mighty Mule-compatible keypads and intercom modules on the truck, and most repairs finish same-day once we confirm which model you have. Owners usually discover the failure the same way: the code stopped taking, the intercom speaker went fuzzy, or the keypad lights up but the gate won’t budge.

If you’re standing at your driveway right now punching a code into a dead keypad, you want the part matched, the price named, and the gate opening again. That’s exactly how we work. Adrian Vance has seen enough Mighty Mule keypads and intercoms on Humble driveways to know which models fail first and what’s actually worth replacing.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule keypads run across several series: FM200, FM350, FM500, MM260, MM360, MM371, MM372, MM571, MM572, and the newer M series. The keypad part numbers you’ll see most often are the MM-KP1000 series and the FM135/FM136 wireless keypads. Intercoms show up as MM-INTERCOM-1 or the newer wireless intercom modules paired with the Mighty Mule Smart Gate Opener.

The compatibility gotcha in Humble: older FM series openers run a wired keypad circuit, while the MM and M series moved to wireless keypads with rolling-code security. A wired keypad won’t work on an MM series and a rolling-code keypad won’t pair with an FM200. We check the motor label and the keypad model on every visit before anything gets swapped. To identify what you have, look at the label on the opener arm itself – it’ll say FM200, MM372, etc. That number decides the part. We install OEM Mighty Mule parts when they’re available, and for discontinued FM-series keypads we use quality aftermarket equivalents that pair with the existing receiver. We stock both.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
  • Keypad lights come on but the gate won’t open. Usually the keypad membrane has worn through, or the controller board inside the keypad stopped sending signal. We see this most on keypads exposed to full Texas sun for three-plus years.
  • Code worked yesterday, dead today. Rain intrusion through a cracked face plate is the usual culprit in Humble. The PCB shorts against the housing and the keypad stops transmitting. It’s repairable if caught early; if the board is corroded, it needs a swap.
  • Intercom speaker crackles or drops audio mid-conversation. The speaker cone isn’t designed for direct weather exposure, and humidity along FM 1960 doesn’t help. The wire terminals also loosen over time against the post mount.
  • Gate opens for one code but not for another. The keypad’s memory chip can partially erase when the onboard battery dies. This is the one symptom most often misdiagnosed as a motor problem.
  • Keypad beeps continuously or buttons stick. Membrane degradation. The tactile pads underneath the keys separate from the circuit layer, and the keypad registers ghost presses or fails to register presses at all.

We also service and stock parts for LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing keypads if you ever swap brands down the road. One company covers all of it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the breakdown for Humble:

  • Mighty Mule keypad replacement (wireless): $145 to $215 installed, including the new keypad, pairing, and the part disposal.
  • Mighty Mule keypad replacement (wired FM series): $160 to $230 installed, including new wire connections and terminal sealing.
  • Intercom module replacement: $190 to $320 installed, depending on whether the intercom is wired or wireless and the condition of the existing mount.
  • Both keypad and intercom: $280 to $420 installed, bundled labor.

The range comes from model availability and mounting conditions. An OEM Mighty Mule keypad for an MM372 costs more than an aftermarket FM-series replacement, and a keypad on a brick column takes longer to mount clean than one on a steel post. You get the price in writing before we start, per Haven Standard Clause 1. Every install includes the photo record of what was found and what went in.

Every keypad or intercom swap is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails within a year, we make it right at no charge.

Keypads and intercoms run low-voltage DC, so there’s no high-voltage shock risk like a gate motor capacitor. What you can safely do: check the keypad battery, verify the code using the master reset procedure in your Mighty Mule manual, and confirm the operator is still receiving power at the outlet. That’s a five-minute check that rules out the easy stuff.

What goes wrong with DIY: pairing a rolling-code keypad to an MM series receiver isn’t a simple screwdriver job. The learn button timing is tight, and if you pair the wrong keypad to the receiver, you can lock out the original codes. We’ve also pulled apart aftermarket keypads on Humble columns that were wired backward at the terminal strip, which fries the intercom board on the next power cycle. If you’ve already got the keypad in hand and just need it installed, call us at (346) 423-6136. We’ll mount it, wire it, pair it, and hand you the paperwork.
